The Avett Brothers at The Arches

One of biggest grassroots success stories of the last decade, the Avett Brothers have joined the likes of Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes and Laura Marling as one of the key players in the nu-folk revival of the last few years.
Despite the name, the band are in fact a trio, forming when North Carolina brothers Scott and Seth Avett, on banjo and guitar respectively, recruited double bass player Bob Crawford. Swiftly releasing their first EP and embarking on an ambitious 21-city slog in 2002, they soon picked up fans across the country with a combination of determined self promotion, hard work and raw talent. By 2009, with eighth album I and Love and You released on Columbia, they were selling out strings of back-to-back shows in New York. By 2011, they were performing on stage with Mumford and Sons and all-time idol Bob Dylan at the Grammys.
Raised on a strict diet of acoustic music - Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Hank Williams and the aforementioned Dylan - the result is a rootsy amalgam of folk, country, bluegrass, rock and pop, causing critics to think up a new term - 'punkgrass' - to describe parts of their celebrated live shows. The naked honesty of their lyrics, depth of their songwriting and rousing intensity of their live performances have made them one of the biggest and most respected folk acts today.
