After seeing Melville’s debut feature, Jean Cocteau enlisted the young visionary to create a film adaptation of his popular novel of the same name. The twisted relationship of siblings Elisabeth and Paul stems from their close childhood, when Elisabeth cared for an injured Paul. As the pair grow older, romance and jealousy enter their lives with wicked and surprising consequences. The mixture of Melville’s elegance and Cocteau’s warped poeticism make this the most stunning meeting of minds in French cinema. Screening on 35mm
