Bottle Shock + wine tasting

There are certain unforgettable moments in history when America has triumphed against long odds and proved itself to the world: Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon; the U.S. Men’s Hockey team beating the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympics. But one such moment has never received the recognition it deserves: In 1976, a small American winery sent shock waves through the wine industry by besting the exalted French wines in a blind tasting, putting California wines on the map for good. Novice vintner Jim Barrett risked everything to realize his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted California Chardonnay. Meanwhile in Paris, struggling wine seller Steven Spurrier came up with an idea for a publicity stunt to help his floundering shop. Little did Spurrier and Barrett realize they were about to change the history of wine forever.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

What would you say if we told you The Grosvenor was being transformed into a Chocolate Factory this Easter? Luckily, it’s not pure imagination. We’re screening the original Charlie & The Chocolate Factory film, followed by a choc-tastic feast that has to be seen (and tasted) to be believed. We start with the iconic 1971 film in which Charlie Bucket wins the once-in-a-lifetime chance to tour the wonderful Wonka Factory with Gene Wilder as the marvellously eccentric Willy Wonka. Along with fellow Golden Ticket winners Augustus Gloop, Violet Beauregarde, Veruca Salt and Mike Teevee, Charlie and his Grandpa make some startling discoveries and, of course, enjoy a host of sweet treats. Which brings us to the next part of the event. Upstairs in The Café, we invite you to enjoy our own hand-crafted peanut butter fudge lollies, and blueberry gobstoppers, and real fizzy lifting juice and chocolate teacups and passion fruit tea. Not to mention a 10-foot chocolate river complete with marshmallow boats! You’ll also get the chance to get your hands chocolatey, creating your very own Gronka bars (that’s the delicious marriage of Grosvenor and Wonka, don’t you know) . Scrumdiddlyumptious. We anticipate this one selling out so act quick and book your Golden Ticket by calling 0845 166 6002. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Elite Syncopations

“The ballet is fun… Here is Mr MacMillan in full verve. That’s entertainment.’ – Anna Kisselgoff, The New York Times, 1976 We are privileged and delighted to be showing MacMillan’s popular, light hearted ballet Elite Syncopations, which premiered in 1974 and was recorded by the BBC in 1975. With music by Scott Joplin, this playful piece was choreographed on the Royal Ballet by their Director Sir Kenneth MacMillan, who created many ballets that remain in the repertoire today; Manon, Mayerling, Romeo and Juliet and Song of the Earth, to name a few. The original cast is a list of Poyal Ballet royalty, so come and see them let their hair down to Joplin’s fantastic rhythms! This film is being shown with kind permission from the British Film Institute, the BBC and Lady MacMillan. Presented by The Cottier Dance Project.
