At the end of May, 2013 Glasgow bids a fond farewell to the amazing Pavel Haas Quartet which has delivered three years of mighty performances that have each been beautifully introduced with charm and insight. The weekend of 31st May – 2nd June will see their three year residency come to a close and they plan to end this musical adventure on a high note by programming a weekend of concerts featuring some of their favourite musicians and music.

The quartet has come up with a surprising and beguiling mix from the high seriousness of Beethoven’s Op. 130, to the high art of clowning of Harlequin and a clarinet quartet who, PHQ say, “can play simply everything!”

On Friday 31st May the Pavel Haas Quartet will be performing Brahms: Quartet No. 2, Op.51 and Beethoven: Quartet Op.130 with “Grosse Fuge” finale (Op.133) at the University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel. ‘Music of the future’ is what Beethoven was writing when he penned Op. 130. He did not expect his contemporaries to understand this music and, even today, listening to Grosse Fuge can be dumbfounding and astounding experience.

During the afternoon of Saturday 1st June clarinetist Karel Dohnal will perform Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Harlequin at Cottiers Theatre. Stockhausen is not normally thought of as being playful and hilarious – but this performance promises to be both. A virtuoso solo clarinetist performs, dances and plays to the camera while portraying the Commedia dell’Arte character, Harlequin. Karel Dohnal does it superbly in a performance suitable for all the family.

On Saturday night Salsa Celtica will raise the roof of Òran Mór when they are joined by a folk-jazz fusion in the shape of the PaCoRa trio. They bring East European fiddle playing with jazz cimbalom and bass, with a range that runs from Django Reinhardt to Ellington, stopping at many points along the way to sample different jazz styles and genres.

The Pavel Haas Quartet describe them by saying “This is a clarinet quartet and they can play simply everything…” and they are right. The wacky and wonderful Clarinet Factory will be playing in the Cottiers Theatre during the evening of Sunday 2nd June. Their music is a brilliant mix of classical, jazz, urban and contemporary which is wonderfully delivered. The beauty about a Clarinet Factory concert is that anything could happen!

To round off this brilliant weekend of musical riches the Pavel Haas Quartet and friends will be giving a show-stopping finale performance at St Peter’s RC Church. They will be performing Pavel Haas: Quartet No. 2 with percussion and Mendelssohn: Octet in E flat major Op. 20. There is no music more festive and uplifting than Mendelssohn’s Octet and Pavel Haas Quartet combine it with their signature piece, music by the man after whom they are named. Haas’ second quartet is a riot, bringing together folk music and jazz, building in a spot for percussionist.

As Artists in Residence Pavel Haas Quartet has supplied fantastic musical performances over the past three years. In September the two new Artists in Residence: the Elias String Quartet and pianist Llŷr Williams will take their place.

No strangers to Glasgow, these outstanding performers come together in our city for a unique three year project to present complete cycles of the two most substantial bodies of work Beethoven produced: his string quartets and piano sonatas. Each September from 2013 to 2015, Glasgow Music will present an array of these pieces combined with lectures, city walks and sessions designed to allow audiences to get extraordinarily close to some of these masterpieces, in the company of the artists.

Svend Brown, Director of Glasgow Music, said: “Over the past three years the amazing Pavel Haas Quartet have lightened up many a Glasgow evening with their thrilling music making. The concerts throughout their final weekend promise to be just as breathtaking. Their professionalism and integrity have continually impressed and we have been proud to call them our artist in residence. We look forward to welcoming their successors, the Elias Quartet and pianist Llŷr Williams, when they pick up the baton as Artists in Residence in September.”
