Hummingbird Coffee Shop and Patisserie

Photo: Hummingbird cafe. Hummingbird, 59 Hyndland Street, Partick (0141 334 9699) is the creation of friends Carrie Glass and Karen Hepburn. Two local women who are putting their culinary skills to good use in this great little coffee shop with its bright and tasteful decor and array of mouthwatering home baked cakes. Not to mention their delightfully smooth Segafredo coffee and tempting lunch menu.

From the outside Hummingbird looks enticing and interesting and once you step over the threshold you will be captivated. Absolutely everything is cooked or baked on the premises from organic bread to home-made chutney. Seasonal vegetables are used to produce appetising soups such as Roasted Tomato and Basil or Butternut Squash and Curry - just the thing to chase away those winter blues. Quiche is also a good choice for lunch and the aspargus, roast potato and blue cheese recipe is a winner with me.

When Karen and Carrie set up a stall at the Farmers' Market in Partick selling their home baking and other produce. This venture was so successful that they were constantly asked where their shop was. So they thought "if the demand is already there why not go ahead and open a shop?"

Photo: Hummingbird cafe cupcake. Now their former stallholder friends know where to get their cuppa on Market Days and local shopkeepers also lend their support. Frances Buchanan from the nearby Mansfield Gallery is a daily customer and a very loyal and happy clientele has been built up since Hummingbird opened in June, 2004.

Their home baking is both pleasing to the eye and the palate with choices such as delightfully light little cup cakes or satisfying organic scones. There is also a lovely window display with unusual and attractive kitchen utensils and cookware to purchase - who would have thought a ladle could be so lovely?

Growing in confidence they have diversified to offer outside catering and produce celebration cakes to order. Both Carrie and Karen are committed to making Hummingbird a big success with a combination of creativity and quality. Well worth a stroll over from Byres Road or when taking a break from shopping in Partick or Hyndland.

Closed Mondays.

Went for lunch to the Humming Bird today only to be met with a shut door and a Sticky on the window saying no longer trading. Why on earth has this been allowed to happen?? Is there any way we can lodge a protest directly?!
