Eating Out in Glasgow's West End: Indian Restaurants
Ashoka West End
1284 Argyle Street, Glasgow
Telephone:0141 339 3371
A familiar landmark at the end of Argyle Street, is one of Glasgow's culinary institutions. Over the past thirty years or so it has retained its popularity with curry afficienados, many of whom tasted their first bhoona or vindaloo in this popular restaurant. When asked to recommend an Indian Restaurant in the city the Ashoka West End immediately springs to mind - with a menu offering all the familiar dishes, large portions, excellent service and consistently high quality - you can't go wrong. Belying its age the decor is fresh and attractive and the restaurant has a modern relaxed ambience.
Seats 25 upstairs and 35 downstairs.
The Ashoka West End has grown from strength to strength with Nasreen Aksi, female restauranteur at the helm. It is popular with people meeting after work, late night diners and visitors after a day spent in the nearby Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.
Opening Hours
Sunday -Thursday 5 p.m. till midnight
Friday and Saturday 5.00 p.m. - 1.00 a.m.

Ashoka
19 Ashton Lane, off Byres Road (337 1115). One of the popular and long established Ashoka chain. A very busy restaurant with all the favourite dishes. Popular for office parties. (£ - £,£)
Balbir's
Pure Vegetarian Cuisine,11 - 13 Hyndland Street, Partick. (334 0084). A fairly new arrival - this small restaurant is unusual in that it is run by a group of women who produce traditional home made dishes. I need to get along here to check it out as it sounds very interesting and prices are reasonable. (£)
Bombay Hut
1166/1170 Argyle Street, Glasgow. Tel: 0141 560 2070.
A spacious restaurant with great food and friendly service. Deljit and Jaspal Singh have set up shop with a chef who previously worked at the renowned Killermont Polo Club and offer the same good quality as can be found at their 'Taste of Punjab' takeaway.
The restaurant is open from noon - midnight Monday - Friday and from 5 p.m. - 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. (££) Lots of deals on offer including: £6.95 three course special 3 - 6 p.m. Monday - Friday. Function suite available.
Creme de la Creme
1071 Argyle Street, Anderston (221 3222). Not strictly within the West End but too remarkable to leave out this restaurant is enormous and was previously a cinema. It is very popular especially for special nights out and large parties. You can choose from either a la carte or tackle the enormously popular buffet. (£, £)
Killermont Polo Club
2022 Maryhill Road (946 5412). To the North of the West End this is another restaurant lying just outwith the area but it simply cannot be excluded. It is really different with great food and very elegant surroundings. You will love it. (£,£) Lunch at £5.95 for two courses is a great deal.
Millenneum Platter
120 Dumbarton Road, Partick (339 2068). Just the right name for the era. A fairly recent arrival this is a friendly and unpretentious curry shop, with all the traditional favourites at very reasonable prices. It is bright and cheerful and has a wide range of menu options at various prices. The buffet is a great attraction and lunch is only £4.95. (£)
Shalimar
23 Gibson Street, Hillhead (556 5589). This Pakistani Restaurant has been a firm favourite with the University crowd for many years. It is relaxed and welcoming and very reasonable. (£). Lunch menu £5.95
Shish Mahal
66 - 68 Park Road, Hillhead. (339 8256). A West End tradition 'the Shish' was my first Indian culinary experience. It has been welcomed back to the area after a temporary relocation. Serving both Indian and Pakistani food it provides all the usual popular choices and some unusual additions are very tempting. It remains very popular with a happy band of regular customers - its reputation is well deserved.(£, £)

Strikingly simple surroundings complement a menu of imagination, verve and exquisitely prepared food
Spice Harvest
148 Woodlands Road (0141 332 2288). A new arrival in Woodlands (June, 2000) this restaurant is proving very popular. I've peeped in at lunchtime and it is busy - you can get a special deal at lunchtime for only £3.50 (£ - ££). Very efficient carry out service.
Indian Orchard
315 Dumbarton Road, Partick (357 5624). This restaurant is very popular with locals and you can enjoy all your favourites in a friendly atmosphere. Prices are reasonable. (£)
Wee Curry Shop
7 Buccleuch Street, 353 0777
A popular and friendly restaurant serving delicious, freshly prepared food. A second shop has recently opened in the heart of the West End in Ashton Lane.(£, £)

'Peerless food straight from the skillet in this homely nook
Comments
I am an Indian, a good cook and fond of eating out so am giving the following comments to help others. I have tried numerous 'Indian' restaurants in Glasgow. SO far I have found Kamasutra the best. Thats because it has good interiors and is not shoddy, smelly and cheaply done up; it has good service and most importantly the food does not all taste the same! The south chilli chicken does actually taste different from a chicken korma.
The ones that are second in category are Ashoka, Polo Club and perhaps Cafe India. The others like Mother India and Mr Singh's India are overhyped.

Everyone must try the Chandigrah Indian Restaurant just off Byres Road. The food is fantastic, the atmosphere relaxed and the service impeccable. It's a little gem and not too expensive!

Recentley dined at Mother Indian, whats gone wrong? I thought it was supposed to be busy, I booked the table and got in the same night. The portions have suddenly shrunk in size, the coffee was tastless dishwater, and when I clean a table I dont throw bits of rice and nan on the floor. I wont be goning back.
