Celtic Connections 2014: Imelda May, Old Fruitmarket. Review P. Keightley

Imelda MayImelda May Old Fruitmarket Celtic Connections 2014

Imelda rocked the Old Fruitmarket at her Celtic Connections gig.   Sparkling and shimmying she radiated energy as she bounced her mic, clapped her hands and moved freely across the stage – clearly enjoying her set of upbeat tunes.

With her red lips, dramatic quiff and sleek leopard-skin dress, she brought to mind those sassy sex bomb 50s stars.  May captivates the audience with a fine set of vocal pipes and an abundance of personality.

She performed songs from her forthcoming album as well as some of her older favourites including, ‘Mayhem’ and ‘Johnny’s Got a Boom Boom. ‘

For her encore she sang ‘Dreams Are Free’ accompanied only by a ukulele – along with the full band she sang ‘Breakdown’.

The packed hall was full of rockers of all ages, who clapped along and were eager to relive fun times.

Imelda Mary Higham, from Dublin has had amazing success and she clearly fills a niche for rockabilly and rock n roll nostalgia.
