Bob Law Blog: Kayaking on Loch Ard
Loch Ard sits on the southern edge of the Trossachs district a few miles west of Aberfoyle and directly under the eastern flanks of Loch Lomond. Although a small loch it has much to entertain the kayaker with: an open section of water boasting a crannog, an island castle ( a small ruin), another larger island and magnificent highland views.
Another feature of this loch is a short river section, perfect for beginner paddlers as it has no rapids, is very slow moving, and leads to further calm waters of extraordinary beauty and stillness. This is important as you have to retrace your strokes by paddling back upriver to your starting point but under normal conditions it is just as easy as paddling downstream.
On a calm sunny day it feels like heaven on earth with surrounding woodlands and hillsides creating incredible reflections on the water. The kayak trip is a half day adventure of 3 to 5 hours, depending on speed of craft and inclination. but one that will live long in the memory.
