Bend It Like Beckham director Gurinder Chadha OBE and Guardian journalist, author and screenwriter Sarfraz Manzoor to attend preview screening of Blinded By the Light at Glasgow Film Theatre this July

 On Tuesday 16 July (19.50) at Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT), acclaimed director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham, Bride & Prejudice, Viceroy’s House, current hit television show Beecham  House) will attend a Q&A following a preview screening of her latest feature Blinded by the Light.

The film is inspired by Guardian journalist Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir, Greetings From Bury Park, where a teenager learns to find his own voice through the words and music of Bruce Springsteen. Manzoor will also be in attendance at the Q&A.

Britain, 1987: When music fanatic Javed discovers the illustrious back catalogue of Bruce Springsteen, his world is turned upside down. Already a creative soul, his passion for music and writing is set alight by the songs of the working-class poet, whose lyrics feel all too familiar to the aspirational teenager. Yearning to escape his rundown hometown and the rules of his traditional Pakistani household, Javed finds himself caught in between two worlds and must discover if he too is Born to RunBlinded By the Light is a timely coming-of-age story that proves that the right song has the capacity to transcend race, religion and place, and help us discover who we really are.

Blinded By the Light had its World Premiere at Sundance Film Festival, and has been hailed as: “a glorious and almost terminally pure coming-of-age story” by David Erlich of IndieWire, with Johnny Oleksinski of The New York Post declaring: “I guarantee it will make you feel better than any other film that comes out this year.”

Paul Gallagher, Glasgow Film Theatre Programme Manager, said: “We’re very excited to welcome Gurinder and Sarfraz to GFT for what promises to be a brilliant evening of air-punching emotion. The film is a delight and I can’t wait to geek out about all things Springsteen with these exceptional filmmakers.”
