fb-300x300Jerry Dowds & Redjade Yuan – ‘Circadian Symphony’

Opening reception: Thursday 30 May, 5-7pm

Exhibition: 31 May – 15 June

The Royal Glasgow Institute exists to promote contemporary art and one of the ways in which it does this is by awarding a Graduate prize at the Glasgow School of Art degree show. In 2012, the prize was awarded to two very different and distinct artists, Redjade Yuan and Jerry Dowds. As part of this award both artists will be exhibiting new works at the Institute’s Kelly Gallery.

Jerry is based in Glasgow and works with sculpture, painting, video and digital technology.

“My work reflects upon everyday objects and rituals, exploring the colour and mood of an instant. Paired down visuals which occupy the space between abstraction and representation. I use commonly found materials and report on our daily rituals, allowing us to acknowledge the overlooked and ruminate upon the ephemeral.” – Jerry Dowds

Yuan’s work explores psychogeographical symphony in everyday life.

Yuan’s works in multimedia including performance, video, installation, sculpture, photography, and print. She is from Beijing and has been living and studying in UK since 2009.

"Two years ago I began taking photographs as I travelled around the Highlands and Islands on the west coast of Scotland while playing gigs. I have always had an immense passion for the Highlands and Islands, maybe its because my Grandfather comes from Skye? who knows! but one thing for sure is that I have always been pulled there. I had no intensions of becoming a photographer it just happened, I love these places so much I felt I had to capture these memories. I hope you like the pictures."

One of the driving forces behind The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Patricia Cain, has been awarded this year's £25,000 Threadneedle Prizefor her painting Building the Riverside Museum which features the building under construction.

Patricia's work was chosen from a shortlist of seven which included three Scottish artists, by selectors Xavier Bray, Assistant Curator at the National Gallery, David Rayson, Professor of Painting at the Royal College of Art and Michael Sandle RA, Fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.

Earlier this year, Patricia, who lives and works in Glasgow, won the Aspect Prize 2009/10. Patricia trained as a lawyer before becoming a full-time artist in 2004, going on to complete her PhD at Glasgow School of Art. Her work is focused largely on the regeneration of Glasgow, and Building the Riverside Museum explores the physical construction of the Glasgow Riverside Museum of Transport, designed by architect Zaha Hadid.

Born in Derry, N.Ireland and currently living in Scotland, John Deery has always had a passion for Art and takes it with him wherever he goes. He enjoys working in a variety of media, from watercolour to oils, although most of my work now features acrylic paint and mixed media. His passion for travel and adventure has given John a love of landscapes, and the world's ever changing and wildly varied surfaces are the focus of much of his work. He currently paints, plays music and works as an art teacher in Glasgow.

Chris Smith | Mon Mar 30 2009

Hi There, Stumbled on this site by accident. I am keen to take up drawing/painting and wondered if there are any classes available. I live near the west end/finneston - walking distance to classes would be ideal.

anne flaherty | Wed Mar 18 2009

I wonder if anyone knows of any art clubs or art groups around the west end of Glasgow. I'd like to join one. I paint with oils and acrylics.

Debbie | Wed Feb 11 2009

Hi! I am looking for artists who would be prepared to paint Glasgow's streets and homes with a view to create a database where people could find and buy paintings of where they live. Is anyone interested in joining this original venture? If you are, e-mail me a picture of your work and a contact number or e-mail address. Mine is val64@tiscali.co.uk

Hi there. I am not sure if this is the right forum for my enquiry but i wondered if you could offer any advice. I would like to take up drawing and painting. At school (many years ago ) I did have a bit of a flair for art and need someone to point me in the right direction. Do you know of any evening classes that might suit me?

Pamela McDaid | Tue Jul 15 2008

To whom it may concern, I am young, local artist, working to raise support for a voluntary internship I will begin in July. I am enquiring about the possibility of a small space to display a very small selection of my work. Failing that, an information stand or flyer distribution would also be much appreciated, to increase support and raise the profile of the project I am working for and of my work. Please inform me of any possibility to take part in an exhibition, or any other more suitable events. Thank-you, Hannah McCall www.myspace.com/hannahmccallart Information about the project I am working for can be found at: www.soulinthecitydurban.com

I have just found this site. It is really useful. Can anyone recommend a printer in Glasgow, or elsewhere, for getting good quality prints made from original paintings at a reasonable price ? Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

David Peutherer | Fri Oct 26 2007

Hello Lynne, I stumbled on to your excellent site by good luck rather than skill. I exhibited on the railings and the Hillhead Library some years ago. I stopped due to health problems and living in France half the year. I would to recommence. Looking forward to hearing from you. Eva

Eva Sinclair | Mon Sep 10 2007

Is it possible to exhibit/sell some of my art on the railings in the next few months? I am not a professional artist and just paint as a hobby. I have had a few commissions to date and am interested in becoming more serious in painting. Seana
