The West End Festival (WEF), Glasgow’s largest cultural event, announces 23 choral and singing events to take place across the festival in June. The musical strand has an increased presence than previous years and is kicked off at a new event, Come and Sing, which is looking for singers of all abilities to get involved and experience being part of a large performing chorus.
As part of a new initiative, working with the acclaimed musical director Michael Bawtree, performers from this event will be invited to make up the West End Festival Chorus which will have its inaugural performance at 7pm on Monday 2 June at St Peter’s Church. The Chorus will also be performing alongside two specially selected soloists to fit in with the Festival’s recurring Commonwealth theme, Daniel O’Connor a baritone from New Zealand and Ankna Arockiam an Indian mezzo.

Rehearsals – 25th May

Taking part is straight forward, attend the rehearsal on Sunday 25 May 1.30pm – 5pm at Partick Trinity Church, then perform the rehearsed scores at the performance that evening, starting at 6.30pm.

The Commonwealth theme is omnipresent across the festival, and Come and Sing will have choral works representing many parts of the Commonwealth. Sounds inspired by Scotland will be represented alongside England, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and India.

Michael Bawtree, Musical Director, said: “The inclusion of the Commonwealth in the West End Festival Chorus has made this a particularly interesting project. With enthusiastic performers the variety of the scores should really come to life.”
Michael Bawtree will also be conducting 3 other concerts during the festival with the Glasgow Chamber Choir.

Come and Sing will raise funds for the West End Festival, with a strong sense of local and worldwide community. There are a further 22 singing and choral events during the West End Festival for example the Big Hymn Sing on Sunday 8 and 15 June.
Liz Scobie, chair of the West End Festival board, said: “Come and Sing will be a good, fun way for singers of all abilities to get even more involved with the West End Festival. It is a wonderful opportunity to have your voice heard while being a part of a lively new initiative, with a real community and commonwealth spirit.”
